Q & A: How to get rid of stretch marks

Hello, this is my my second blog reader who submitted a question and I am always happy to help ;).
"Hi GiGi, I recently read on your blog where you had given a home remedy on how to minimise open pores. I decided to try it and I must say so far it is working. My question to you is this, I am a mother of a 4 month old and am very self conscious of my lower back and tummy area. I have stretch marks. My aunt had told me to use bio oil but it seems to not have worked, is there anything you recommend?"
Lets call her 'Josephine'.

After much research on Bio Oil, I must say I am a little surprised you have not achieved the results you desire. I do understand your frustration and am going to advise you of some other over the counter products and some home remedies that my mama taught me ;).

Bella B Tummy Honey Butter - This has been around for years. The formulation includes shea butter and minimal fragrance so you wont itch. When your tummy was being stretched you may have itched alot which could have caused you to have more marks than intended. Now that you have had your baby this will work by fading them combined with making the skin more elastic.

The one I am most familiar with is Keri Renewal Skin Firming LotionThis I find works great on darker complected women with darker marks. It mostly works to help hide stretch marks and really does help them blend in so they are much less noticeable.

The name of this one I think says it all, Urban Skintrtion Stratch Mark Cream with Shea Butter, Vitamin E, C and Collagen.

What causes stretch marks?

When the skin is overstretched, Stretch marks are the scars that are left behind. Fibers in the middle layer (dermis) have been broken and they most often occur during pregnancy, bodybuilding, extreme weight gain, occasionally puberty and are usually found on the abdomen, breasts, buttocks, legs, and upper arms. While it is possible to reduce and even eliminate the appearance of stretch marks, it is much easier to prevent them.

How to prevent stretchmarks?

The best prevention is either to reduce the cause of stretching or to increase elasticity because stretch marks occur when skin is stretched to the limit of its elasticity.

Increase your skins elasticity by using: Lotions containing cocoa butter are rumored to not only help reduce stretch marks, but to help prevent them entirely. Any cream or oil that is made specifically for the prevention or treatment of stretch marks will help keep your skin healthy and elastic.

Sidebar: If you are breast feeding consult your doctor first as lotions can contain ingredients that may be passed into breast milk.

Home Remedies:

  • Time – like all types of scarring, Stretch marks will fade over time.
  • Exfoliate daily – use a loofah to scrub with daily while you shower daily.
  • Vic’s Vapor Rub – my mama taught me this one: rub unto skin by applying it to a washcloth or paper towel and rubbing it forcefully into the scarred skin on a nightly basis for a few weeks.
  • Increase Circulation – by taking hot baths and massaging the areas regularly.
  • Vitamin E Gel – Break open vitamin E capsules and rub the oil into the skin over the stretch marks daily for 2 weeks.
  • Stretch Mark Creams and Lotions – Using stretch mark creams and stretch mark lotions that heal and beautify your skin can reduce the appearance of stretch marks. The following ingredients are widely   accepted as beneficial for this purpose:
  • Cocoa butter
  • Rose hip oil
Now if still feeling down, I have added a celeb pic so you see that all are susceptible to having stretch marks no matter your status.

I hope I was of some help and remember life is a blessing ;), All the best and congrats on your lil one.
