| Designer James Black: Makeup done by me |
When it comes to your eyeshadow, experimenting with more than one technique, will help you obtain the best results and the look you desire. Once you've nailed the basic techniques you'll become more advanced.
Before advancing, you have to first determine makeup application techniques, amongst the various eye shapes.
Also take into consideration, not ONLY the eye itself, but also their placement in the face.
Do you you know how your eyes are shaped? How would you describe them? Well if your not sure, below I'm sharing some optical illusions of the most common eye shapes, and their different types of placement in the face by adding some pics as reference...So go grab a mirror ;)
Shapes: Round,Almond and Oval
Placements: Wide-set, Deep-set, Close-set Prominent and Hooded
Now you may be wondering how do you determine your eye shape right? You have that mirror? Ok now study one of your eyes closely, first open and then close. After you have done that, study your physical eye shape and compare its size to other face features. Now measure one of your eye's width by comparing it to the distance between your eyes. Is your eye equally visible from one corner to the other when covered by the 'hood'? Woot Woot...you now know your eyeshape ;)
Shapes:
Round Eyes
Characteristics: Round eyes are large and open-looking. I've always loved working with these shapes because I think they are not only stunning but they can stun you. They are really beautiful when made up right.
Technique: To elongate your round eyes and make them appear more shall I say almond; First apply a medium colored eyeshadow on your entire lid, up to the crease, extending slightly upwards and outwards towards the brow (for a cat like shape). Then apply eyeliner along your upper lid, but extend slightly beyond and upwards at the corner. Now apply most of your mascara to the top, outer and lower lashes.
Almond
Characteristics: Although they are deemed smaller in size, these are actually the most common eye shape BUT they come in various sizes so to differentiate them, I call them BLC: Big, Large and Cat-like. As the name suggests they are shaped like an almond and I consider this shape to be exotic, with the slightly turned up corners, it makes them beautifully balanced. This shape is soft, welcoming and youthful.
Technique: Apply a light shade eyeshadow over your entire upper lid, and a darker shade of the same colour towards the outer corner. Highlight just under the brow bone and then line the entire upper lash line, making the lower lash line optional BUT For an intense look you may line lower lash. Apply mascara to the upper lashes, with emphasis on the outer corners.
Characteristics: Having an oval aspect, the shape of these eyes are slightly round and flattened (think Asian).
Technique: To make oval shaped eyes look proportionate and draw attention to their depth and color: Apply shadow over the entire lid then work your eyeliner by giving it a lil upturn (wing) to give an elongated appearance.
Placements:
Wide-set
Characteristics: These have a generous distance between the eyes. This shape is also called "hammer head shark or dolphin" eyes: If you can fit more than one eye’s width in the space between your eyes....your eyes are wide-set.
Technique: By beginning application at the inner corners of the eyes, you will then apply some lighter coloured shadow on the middle part of the lid. Try to avoid going past the outer corners but blend outwards to create a natural finish. You will then line from the inner corner of the eye to the middle and then blend outward. Try to always use a more intense colour near the inner corner of the eyes (this will help your eyes look closer together). When lining eyes, line lower and upper eyelids completely – from inner to outer corners. Generously use mascara on both upper and lower lashes.
Tip: On the bridge of your nose put some bronzer, this will help create more depth which will help give the illusion that eyes are closer together ( a neat lil trick I learned). Another important fact is to keep the hairs in the inner parts of your brows, this also will help to make the eyes appear closer together and more balanced.
Deep-Set
Characteristics: With the eyes sunken in the sockets, Deep-set eyes have the brow bone extended farther out than other types.
Techniques: By using lighter iridescent shades on your lids, this will bring the eyes out of their deep sockets and make them ‘pop’. Use a light, shimmery shadow over the entire upper lid and a darker highlight at the crease.
Tip: Never try smoky eye without a highlighter shadow. Your eyes will definitely get lost
Close-set
Characteristics: If there is a small distance between your eyes, in relation to the proportion of the rest of your face: you have close-set eyes.
Techniques: Use shadows in the shade of pearly white or silver on the inner corner of your eyes, right next to your nose. Line only the outer half of the eye and use more mascara at the outer corner. This will brighten them up create the illusion of width.
Prominent
Characteristics: Setting far forward in the face, these eyes tend to dominate the facial features making the eyelids too pronounced. I myself have prominent eyes. This shape is also called "goldfish eyes or bulging."
Techniques: Being very convex in shape makes eyes appear bulging (I should know teehee) so to reduce that effect and make eyes recede, apply a dark eyeshadow near the lash line and a lighter one on the crease. Blend upward towards the brow. Apply liner to the lash bases, from corner to corner this I find gives my eyes a smoldering and mysterious look.
Tip: To make my eyes appear more smoldering, when I'm not in the mood to wear too much makeup: I lift my eyelids and line under my eyelids. Only do this if you can bear to ;)
Hooded
Characteristics: With these eyes, the eyelids appear partially closed and are being covered by the brow line. The crease (the dip underneath the brow bone) is not visible. They tend to look droopy and slope down at the outer corners, looking very sad; like 'puppy dog' eyes.
Techniques: Use a light shadow on the brow bone and the inside corner of your eyes. Use a highlighter on the brow bone, a medium shade along the entire lid and a darker contour shade towards the outer eye. Line upper lash-line only (to keep the eyes looking open) and smudge with a cotton swab. Apply black mascara to upper lashes. Black because it will give eyes more prominence.
Tip: Use a white eyeliner on the inside of your lower lid to open eyes up.
Well I hope these tips helped! ohh and
