Nicky Minaj teamed up with Reggaeton star Pitbull for the American Music Awards, 2011 nominees announcements. Her look which seemed inspired by a strawberry cupcake (which only her could rock), I must admit was a lil cute but the makeup is another story. There wasn't any wardrobe malfunction (Good Morning America performance, August 2011), because this time her ladies were tucked in tight...well barely.
Minaj wore a CIA.MARTIMA bikini top with a high waisted skirt and not even her two-toned hair could distract me or even you from her colossal cleavage. She wasn't bare chested but it would have been nice if she had opted for another choice of top. Well I guess that's the renderings of a style wild child ;).
Now lets talk about the Makeup: a poor attempt of contouring. Maybe her makeup artist was tired, lighting was poor or Minaj did it herself. Despite what the circumstances were...this is a makeup No No.
As a makeup artist, I find that this trick is one of the best things since slice bread (I do it on myself too). Personally I don't think this technique caters to all. Persons with an already defined nose, doing this may cause the nose to appear pinched. But to achieve a taller more defined nose this is the best way to achieve that....apart from surgery ;).
Here are some tips in achieving that look:
Products to use:
Contour powder or a brown eyeshadow that is a shade or two darker than your actual skin tone. Be sure to use a matte/satin formula for the most natural effect. You can also use a cream foundation or concealer.
A product I recently fell in love with is Smashbox Step-by-step Contour Kit. My MUA pal loves working with MAC Pro Sculpt and Shape powders.
To highlight features use light colours, this will emphasize and make them larger/more prominent. To create shadow, minimize or reduce/recede features, use dark colours this will also create the illusion of depth.
TIP: Persons with really dark skin tones, should instead lighten the surrounding areas to create an illusion of depth, instead of applying colour on an already dark skin tone.
A result of contouring done correctly:

My next post will be about how to contour the different shapes of the nose.
Now go ahead and shape that nose ;).
